For casino-based poker tournaments, increasing revenue normally requires increasing costs. One more 9-person poker table equals 1.25 dealers etc.…
At 50/50 Poker we have found a way to immediately increase “Net” revenue 10, 20 or 30% and even more over time.
What we have developed is a tournament within a tournament that doesn’t require more tables or dealers. It’s called the Top 50. In this tournament every player that is signed up for a tournament is offered the chance to participate in the Top 50.
The Top 50 cost is the same as the buy-in for the original tournament with a 30-40% discount in the house revenue from the original tournament.
The players in the Top 50 are betting that they can finish in the top 50% of the players signed up for the original tournament.
When a casino decides to use the Top 50 to increase revenue, it is a very simple process.
To begin with every player in your database is sent an email that says this:
“When you sign up for a tournament, you are making a bet you can finish in the top 10 or 15% of the field. Why not make a bet that you can finish in the top 50% and pay for your buy in?" Included in the email will be an explainer video. It follows up with the details of exactly how it works, cost and payouts. The explainer video is also set on the front page of your website.
Once the Top 50 is introduced and is being used, the next marketing tool is implemented. When a player signs up for a tournament, they are asked, "Would you like to sign up for the Top 50 tournament within a tournament.” If they aren’t sure what it is, it can be easily explained and/or a small card can be given to them. The card has a written explanation and tells them the explainer video is on the website.
Once the tournament has begun and players have signed up for the Top 50 Tournament within a Tournament, you’d make this announcement.
“Today we have # of players in our Top 50 Tournament within a Tournament and the prize pool is $$$.”
The last step would be to announce the results when 50% of the players have been eliminated.
“In our Top 50 Tournament within a Tournament we have # players sharing the prize pool of $$$ and each player with be receiving $$. Congratulations!”
We did a survey* of tournament poker players to analyze how they would view the Top 50 Tournament within a Tournament and more importantly would they play in it.
The results are amazing, not only for the percentage of people that would play but also their comments. There is no question that our Top 50 Tournament within a Tournament will be immediately successful and create a significant increase in net revenue.

What we've developed is a tournament within a tournament that can immediately increase online tournament net revenue 10, 20, 30%, and even more over time.
The tournament within a tournament is called the Top 50. It works like this. Every player that is signed up for a tournament is offered the chance to participate in the Top 50.
The cost to participate is the exact same buy-in as the original tournament with a 30 to 40% discount in the house revenue.
The players that participate are betting that they can finish in the top 50% of the number of players signed up for the original tournament.
When a site decides to use the top 50 to increase revenue, it is a very simple process.
To begin with every player in your database is sent an email with an explainer video. It simply tells them “You are already making a bet you can finish in the top 10 or 15%, "Why not make a bet that you can finish in the top 50%." Then, it follows up with the details of exactly how it works cost and payouts.
Once the top 50 is introduced and is being used, the next marketing tool is implemented. When a player signs up for a tournament, a follow-up response is, "Would you like to sign up for the Top 50 Tournament within a Tournament. Then, of course, a yes or no button and an option to watch the explainer video.
Each new website sign up will be given an email with the explainer video. Also, a good marketing tool would be to offer a $20 Top 50 free entry.
Once the tournament has begun and players have signed up for the Top 50 Tournament within a Tournament, you would send this message to all the players.
“Today we have # of players in our Top 50 Tournament within a Tournament and the prize pool is $$$.”
The last step would be to message to all the remaining players when 50% of the players have been eliminated.
“In our Top 50 Tournament within a Tournament we have # players sharing the prize pool of $$$ and each player with be receiving $$. Congratulations!”

The perfect poker tournament for off or online sites would be if all the players paid their buy in plus the house cost, then played for a while, and then everybody got their money back, except for the house income. The reason that's the perfect tournament is that it would preserve the bankroll of every single player. In other words, every single player would have money for another tournament.
We have developed a tournament that helps preserve cash for significantly more players. It’s called the Top 50 Free Roll Tournament.
The Top 50 Free Roll Tournament is a simple concept that is attached to a long-term marketing strategy.
One of the problems with larger tournaments is they significantly deplete player's cash. For example, a player that plays $1,000, $5,000 or $10,000 tournaments has a 10-15% of making it to the money. His chance for success is limited and if he doesn’t make it to the money, he walks away with nothing.
Our Top 50 Free Roll Tournament can change that and more importantly increase number of people playing in the larger tournaments, which of course creates more income. We suggest this format be used in the higher buy in tournaments for both on and off line.
The Top 50 Free Roll Tournament works like this. Instead of the normal 10-15 % payout: The first 50% of the players eliminated from the tournament receive nothing. If the winners are the top 15%, the remaining 35% receive their buy in back less the house cost. That means the total prize pool would be divided this way. 35% would go to the people finishing in the top 50% of the field and the remaining 65% would be divided among the top 15% of players.
Player bankroll management is what the Top 50 Free Roll Tournament is designed to do. It simply gives players the chance to play in more tournaments, which of course increase house revenue.

“Hey tournament poker players, I have a question for you.
If you signed up to play in a $100 poker tournament and
you could make a side bet for $100 (to win $100) that you
could finish in the top 50% of the field,
WOULD YOU MAKE THAT BET?”
83% YES/29 14% NO/5 3% Maybe 1
RESPONCES
Lynne Mitchnick Yes Definitely! I make the top 50% far more than half the time with my usual tournament play. So I don’t even think it would change the way I play at all.
Arthur Wu Yes. I'd take it every time. Outlast 50% of the field (which isn't really that hard) and the tourney becomes a freeroll? It's a no-brainer in my book.
Daniel Smith Yes If I don't feel like I'm the favorite to win or top 10 why play at all. I make the bet
David Sherman Yes I probably would, but not because I think it’s a good bet. I’m a gambler
Rob Evans Yes Definitely.
Tim Sorrell Yes I would make that bet every time.
